ダーツは英国生まれのスポーツなのですが、正確な起源がわからないというのが本当のところらしいです。一般にダーツの起源とされているのは14世紀の英国で、百年戦争時代ともバラ戦争時代とも言われています。時代の誤差はあるものの、ダーツのルーツとしてのエピソードはほぼ同じです。
　英国兵士が祖国より遠く離れた戦場で連日戦っている時、わずかな休息の合間に暇つぶしの遊びとして、武器である弓矢の｢矢｣を、横たわったぶどう酒の樽底に投げ刺したのが今日のダーツの始まりと言われています。戦時中のためにぶどう酒の樽が不足してくると、次に的として使用されたのが木を輪切りにしたものでした。木の切り口には年輪が入っているので、次第に彼らは年輪を利用して点数を付け、勝敗を競うようになったそうです。また木の的は使い込むほど表面に亀裂が入るので、これを利用して徐々に採点は複雑なものへと変化していったそうです。

　戦争が終わり祖国へ帰った兵士たちは、戦地で遊んだ木の的をパブへと持ち込み、またもや仲間達で矢投げ競技が行われました。（弓矢の矢ではさすがに危険なので、短く加工したもので競技をしたそうです）これを見たパブのマスターが｢こりゃおもろい！｣と賛同し、みるみるうちにイギリス中のパブへと広まっていきました。そしてパブのマスター達によって、より面白い競技にするための工夫がなされ、ゲームの方法や巧みに配置された得点が生まれたのです。
　ちなみに現在のダーツボードに記されている巧妙な点数配置を考案したのは、1896年、ランカシャー州バリーの｢Brian　Gamlin（ブライアン　ガムリン）｣という大工だといわれています。
　
　1900年代には空前のダーツブームとなりましたが、英国では｢パブでは運に左右されるスポーツは禁止｣という法案がだされ、ダーツも規制下に入ってしまいました。1908年のヨークシャー州で、パブオーナーのフット・アナキンが治安判事に出頭を命じられた際、ダーツボードの法廷持込許可を求めました。そして判事の見守る中、3本のダーツを見事にダブルトップ（ダブル20）に叩き込んだのです。｢もう一度やってみろ！｣という判事のリクエストに、3本のダーツを再びダブルトップに叩き込んだのでした。唖然とした判事は｢ダーツは運に左右されるゲームではない｣という判決を下しました。これがダーツ史上有名な｢フット・アナキンの判決｣です。
　こうしてダーツ競技はイギリス中に広く深く普及していき、第一次世界大戦後には数多くのクラブやチームが結成され、1924年には｢Liccnsed　Victallers　Association｣が｢National　Darts　Association（N. D.A）｣を設立しました。

　ダーツはイギリスを中心に世界中に広がっていきましたが、当時はまだスローラインまでの距離も地方ごとにばらばらでした。1976年に発足した｢World　Darts　Federation（W．D．F）｣が、1977年12月の総会で当時もっともポピュラーであった“7フィート6インチ”と“8フィート”をスタンダードと認め、最終的に“7 フィート9　1/4インチ（2.37M）”が国際的なスタンダードと定めたのです。

　現在主流のエレクトロニックダーツは、1980年頃アメリカにて生まれました。当初は「有料」というゲーム方式が不評であり、ほとんど相手にされなかったそうです。しかし、点数計算をコンピューターが自動的に行ってくれることで初心者にも簡単に楽しめ、また先端がプラスチックという安全性も考慮されて徐々に普及を見せてきました。日本ではメダリスト社の｢スペクトラム｣が発売されると、そのゲーム性と心地よい音響効果によって人気が集まり、爆発的にダーツ人口が増加しました。現在の日本ではハードダーツ人口よりもソフトダーツ人口のほうが多いのではないでしょうか。しかしダーツ人口の普及により、エレクトロニックダーツマシンがゲーム機（ゲームセンターのゲームと同じ）扱いをされ、風営法の適用を受けるようにもなってしまいました。
　ダーツ人口はこれから先、まだまだ増加の一歩をたどるので、規制の方法も徐々に変化していくものと思われます。ダーツに携わる一人一人が英国紳士のようにマナーを重んじていけば、これからも末永く楽しめるスポーツとして国内に定着していくことと思います。

ここでは、当クラブがスティールダーツを行っていますので、スティールダーツ（ハードダーツ）のルール、概要を説明していきます。

ダーツボードの中心のブルから地面までの高さが173cm、ボードの下から投げるラインまでの距離が237ｃｍになります。　またボードの中心からスローラインまでは、2.93ｃｍになります。

ダーツは、シンプルで簡単です。難しく考えてしまう方も多いですが、すごくシンプルです。

１．ダーツは１回３本投げます。　（３本で１セットです）
2.投げる線から足だけ出さずに、ボードに当てる。

これだけです。

１．　ポイント（ソフトダーツではチップと呼ばれてます）　－　ポイントはダーツをボードに刺す役割があります。

２．　バレル　－　バレルはダーツの心臓部であり、ここの重量が全体の９５％を占めています。持つ部分でもあり、ダーツのバランスの中心でもあります。
　　　　　　　　　　　ダーツを親指と人差し指でつまんで投げます。

３．　シャフト　－　シャフトはバレルと羽の部分のフライトとつなぐ役割をしています。　
　　　　　　　　　　　基本的の３サイズの長さがあり、短いショート、長いミディアム、ショートとミディアムの中間のインビト（In Between)の３サイズがあります。
　　　　　　　　　　　バレルの重さや重心位置によって、長いとフラフラしながらダーツが飛ぶことがありますが、短くすることで、改善できます。

４．　フライト　－　羽のの事をフライトと呼びます。羽があることでダーツが真っ直ぐ飛ぶことができます。　形状によって飛び方も変わります。　
　　　　　　　　　　　基本はスタンダードと呼ばれるフライトの形状です。

初心者には、ポイント、バレルはどれでもよいのですが、シャフトはインビトまたはショート、　フライトをスタンダードをお勧めします。

バレルは、２０ｇから２６ｇぐらいまでのバレルがありますので、自分の投げやすい重さや、持ち手のグリップの部分にカットがあり、いろいろな種類がありますので、握りやすく、しっかり指になじむものがよいです。
23g,24gぐらいの重さのバレルが扱いやすいと思います。
